about

Every year, my wife Rebecca and I do a Christmas art project. I write a Christmas song and she creates a piece of art. We then package it up and it becomes our Christmas gift to friends and family. Generally, we have a theme or thought that inspires us and it is a way for us to be able to share what Christmas means to us. And go a little deeper than the commercialization of the season.

This year we moved by the thought that the Angel of the Lord chose a group of shepherds who would have been just sitting in the quiet. Their focus would have been to be listening out for danger with the goal to protect their sheep. In the quiet something rather big, loud and bright appeared to share news of the arrival of someone who was far greater than any danger they were keeping an ear out for. “The Messiah Foretold, is here!” There is that thought that God often comes to talk to those who sit In the Quiet, listening out for whatever may come. I hope this year that thought might encourage us all to find some time and space amidst the busyness of Christmas to sit in the Quiet and listen out to what God would have for us.

Both the song and Rebecca’s Dry Point Etching Artwork are called In the Quiet.

lyrics

It’s in the dark, cold
Together we sit all alone
Listening to the sounds that float around
As we wait for the sun to rise again

And in the quiet we draw near
The Night’s Symphony we hear

This moonlight sharpens our resolve
To protect the flock our soul’s aim
Ears wide open to any danger
Yet nothing this night has found us attacked

And in the quiet we draw near
The Night’s Symphony we hear

Out of the dark and into view
Angelic brilliance breaks the calm
The glory of God it fills the air
We Fall, we fall, Down Down Down

In the quiet you appear
Bring good news to all who’d hear
On this night be of good cheer
Messiah foretold is here.
